Navigation is one of the first things I needed, especially help finding good rides close to home. For Couch-to-Bike-Camping I had to overcome a lot of years working from a chair, and my physical fitness had deteriorated. I found this app called Komoot which seems to be a bit of an underdog here in the US, behind stuff like Strava, Ride with GPS, or Map My Ride.
But Komoot is awesome! Killer app, one of the best apps I have used of any kind. I found it very intuitive; it has an excellent interface on both the phone and the web.

The very best feature is that with my Android phone I can put the phone in battery saver mode, and not only will the application continue to work, but it will wake the display up briefly before each turn in turn-by-turn navigation, and then allow it to go to sleep again. For rides close to civilization (electrons) it’s prevented me from having to buy – and carry – a separate nav device.
I usually map out a ride for the day in the web application on my Surface, and then click the button to trigger navigating on the phone. The phone will then download the route for offline use and start navigating. Once the application has started, I can flip on battery saver using a shortcut, and the phone can then navigate for me for a whole day without the display draining the battery. (Komoot does put up a warning about battery saver mode, which I just dismiss – and it’s worked flawlessly for me.)
Eleven stars, highly recommend: https://www.komoot.com/
